Limitations of conventional skin tissue engineering approaches have driven the development of biomimetic skin equivalent via 3D bioprinting. 3D Printing to Improve Healthcare for Children

I run the Engineering Prototypes and Implants for Children Lab, also known as the EPIC Lab, which is based in Kids Research at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead, in Sydney, Australia. The focus of the EPIC Lab is to use 3D technology to develop pediatric medical devices with the goal of improving children’s lives. Combining my background in engineering and science with our clinical and academic leads, Professor David Little (pediatric orthopedic surgeon) and Professor Joshua Burns (Professor of pediatric neuromuscular rehabilitation), our work is driven by needs in the medical and surgical care of children. We are lucky to be co-located with the Children’s Hospital at Westmead, which enables us to work closely with many varied healthcare professionals on the frontline of children’s care. Our interdisciplinary team includes engineers, scientists, designers, and clinicians, who are all driven by the goal of making children’s lives better.

Australia’s largest 3D technologies in medicine conference were back for its 5th consecutive year this year held on the 14-16th November, at AAMI Park. This year’s conference boasted its largest and best-ever program that would delve deep into the topics of 3D printing, 3D modeling and segmentation, AR/VR, MedTech innovation, ethics and governance, and for the first time a bioprinting session.

UAB Bioprinter Shows Potential to Accelerate Tissue Engineering
Similar to the Cyfuse bioprinter but faster, the UAB proof-of-concept bioprinter picks up multiple spheroids at the same time and places them simultaneously on a matrix of pins. The UAB prototype used a 4-by-4 matrix of 16 pins, so 16 spheroids could be placed at once, with a cycle speed of 45 seconds. Watch the video here.

Scientists Push Bioprinting Capability Forward
Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine (WFIRM) scientists are the first to report using bioprinting to print a tracheal tissue construct comprised of multiple different functional materials. They printed different designs of smooth muscle and cartilage regions in artificial tracheal substitutes showing similar mechanical properties to human tracheal tissue.

Volumetric Bioprinting: The New Paradigm in Regenerative Medicine In order to overcome these limitations, Professor Riccardo Levato of the University Medical Center Utrecht, the Netherlands, and Professor Christophe Moser of École Polytechnique FĂ©dĂ©ral Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland, have proposed a new strategy for the 3D bioprinting. In their recently published article they present a “Volumetric Bioprinting” (VBP) approach to create any convoluted free-form geometry with unprecedented speed of fabrication.

FDA Grants Rare Pediatric Disease Status for Outer Ear Reconstruction SystemThe AuriNovo living ear-shaped tissue is designed to be implanted under the patient’s skin to replace the microtia-affected ear. It is 3D-bioprinted with 3DBio’s ColVivo bio-ink and GMPrint bioprinter and seeded with the patient’s auricular cartilage cells. The tissue is matched in shape to the patient’s contralateral ear for implantation.

GE Healthcare Partners with Formlabs to Help Doctors 3D Print Patient-Specific Anatomical Models Another software and hardware company partnership, further demonstrating the value of end-to-end workflow management in point-of-care 3D printing service. This bundle includes Formlabs 3D printers and substrates and GE Healthcare’s Advantage Workstation (AW), the advanced visualization software used to prepare the 3D models for printing.

Jumbo 3D Manufacturing Partners with MOBILIS Medical for 3D Printing in HealthcareJumbo 3D is partnering up with Modern Bionic Limb Solutions (MOBILIS) Medical Manufacturing to enable 3D manufacturing in healthcare in the UAE and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) regions.
